“Victory of the Word (VOW) was created to celebrate how ilizwi moved from the oral tradition into the printed form – and to explore the challenge of moving ilizwi into the multi-disciplinary arts..”
Welcome to Victory of the Word,
a platform for fundraising and development founded to draw public attention to the plight of the historic Lovedale Press and its custodians in Alice (eDikeni), Eastern Cape.
The Lovedale Press was once a thriving beacon of intellectual life and vernacular expression: it printed and published black educational, religious and literary texts, in indigenous languages, for almost two centuries. After years of neglect and underfunding, the press faces the continuous threat of closure.
VOW is leading a cultural philanthropic initiative to raise funds to save the Lovedale Press as a National Heritage Site. We also want to digitise its rich archive of native literature.
Our mandate is simple: VOW is committed to serving independent artists and preserving visual and written language.
